After a 22-day deployment by Intrinsic Technology, Muir Group has virtualised many of its servers and significantly updated its disaster recovery capabilities. Prior to the virtualisation project, Muir had a number of old servers that needed to be replaced and no centralised storage, while its only disaster recovery policy was to take back-up tapes off site.
Following a capacity planning audit, Intrinsic virtualised 22 physical servers to three VMware-based servers, creating new centralised storage capacity. Intrinsic also installed VMware’s Site Recovery Manager which allows Muir to build, manage and execute its disaster recovery plans with minimal manual intervention.
Ian Whitwell, head of ICT, Muir Group, said, “We have already seen significant benefits as a result of Intrinsic’s work. Our systems are much more robust and efficient, with automatic replication between two sites, and the virtualised solution means we are less reliant on physical servers.
“Most importantly, in the event of a disaster at a main site, we could bring up the servers on our second site within four hours and access data that was no more than a few minutes out of date.”
